In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus embarks on a 10-year journey home after 10 years fighting in the Trojan War. Twenty years of overcoming obstacles brought Corey Saffold from his Odyssey Project graduation in May 2006 to his UW Law School graduation in May 2026. “This voice to speak,” Corey notes, “this voice to be bold and to be confident in the issues that are so near to my heart, is the voice I found in the Odyssey Project.”
Corey shares his journey in a profile in UMOJA Magazine, describing the pivotal role Odyssey played in uncovering his potential when others dismissed him as “not college material” or “not law school material.” He says, “Odyssey expected greatness and brilliance, and it had a way of pulling them out of me. And it’s generational: My daughter later attended Odyssey, and my grandson was in Odyssey Junior.”
We congratulate Corey not only on earning his law degree but also on already landing a job as a Milwaukee attorney specializing in criminal defense and civil rights. “I chose law because I have always been drawn to ways to fight injustice,” he says. “Odyssey was life-changing and made me feel like I could move mountains.”
